📖 Glossary

Data Residency

The physical location where data is stored. Data residency specifies the country or region where servers holding the data are located, but does not by itself determine which laws apply to that data. A US cloud provider operating servers in Singapore provides Singapore data residency but the data may still be subject to US law under the CLOUD Act.

Context

Data residency is often confused with data sovereignty. Residency is about location; sovereignty is about legal jurisdiction. Fund managers need both — data stored in their chosen jurisdiction AND subject only to that jurisdiction's laws.
